چکیده

A spectral formalism has been developed for the “non-intrusive” analysis of parametric uncertainty in reacting-flow systems. In comparison to conventional Monte Carlo analysis, this method quantifies the extent, dependence, and propagation of uncertainty through the model system and allows the correlation of uncertainties in specific parameters to the resulting uncertainty in detailed flame structure. For the homogeneous ignition chemistry of a hydrogen oxidation mechanism in supercritical water, spectral projection enhances existing Monte Carlo methods, adding detailed sensitivity information to uncertainty analysis and relating uncertainty propagation to reaction chemistry. For 1-D premixed flame calculations, the method quantifies the effect of each uncertain parameter on total uncertainty and flame structure, and localizes the effects of specific parameters within the flame itself. In both 0-D and 1-D examples, it is clear that known empirical uncertainties in model parameters may result in large uncertainties in the final output. This has important consequences for the development and evaluation of combustion models. This spectral formalism may be extended to multidimensional systems and can be used to develop more efficient “intrusive” reformulations of the governing equations to build uncertainty analysis directly into reacting flow simulations. © 2003 The Combustion Institute. Computational blood flow simulations and geometric uncertainty quantification in patient-specific aorta-insights

The geometric uncertainty of the aortic valve stenosis was quantified in terms of hemodynamic parameters in the thoracic aorta. A 3D patient-specific aorta geometry was used and the valve modelled as an idealized disk at the inlet of the ascending aorta to mimic the calcification of the heart valves. The uncertainty of the random opening radius was characterized by Beta Probability Density Func...

Error Estimation and Uncertainty Quantification for non-linear CFD problems

Modern research and engineering rely on numerical simulations to predict the behaviour of fluids and some derived physical quantities of interest. These predictions are often strewn with errors and uncertainties. Numerical errors come from replacing the real physics with approximate models solved by numerical approximations, while uncertainties are due to insufficient knowledge of some input va...

An efficient hybrid method for uncer- tainty quantification

A technique for coupling an intrusive and non-intrusive uncertainty quantification method is proposed. The intrusive approach uses a combination of polynomial chaos and stochastic Galerkin projection. The non-intrusive method uses numerical integration by combining quadrature rules and the probability density functions of the prescribed uncertainties. A strongly stable coupling procedure betwee...

Large Eddy Simulations of Flow Around a Cylinder with Uncertain Wall Heating

Numerical simulations of the turbulent flow and heat transfer around an array of cylinder are carried out at Reynolds number ReD = 3, 900. The wall heat flux is assumed to be uncertain and characterized by highest variance in the stagnation point region. Simulations are carried out using a novel uncertainty propagation scheme, the hybrid stochastic projection method. This technique combines the...

Improved Non-Intrusive Uncertainty Propagation in Complex Fluid Flow Problems

The problem of non-intrusive uncertainty quantification is studied, with a focus on two computational fluid dynamics cases. A collocation method using quadrature or cubature rules is applied, where the simulations are selected deterministically. A one-dimensional quadrature rule is proposed which is nested, symmetric, and has positive weights. The rule is based on the removal of nodes from an e...
